VMware and Microsoft Are Friends Again, VMware virtualization on Azure Moves Forward

Late last month, Microsoft made a bold move and began working with an unnamed partner to bring VMware applications to Azure. At the time, VMware was upset with the announcement and Microsoft evaded the problem of who would provide support for these services.

In the initial VMware blog post, the company said "VMware does not recommend and will not provide assistance to customers running on the partner offer announced by Azure," but the company has silently updated its publication after a change of opinion. . The company says that "this offer is being developed independently of VMware, however, it is offered as a dedicated solution, hosted on the server and similar in approach to other VMware Cloud provider partners (VCPP). VMware consisting of FlexPod. "

In summary, it seems that Microsoft and VMware have discovered a way to work together where both parties are happy with the result. Microsoft, meanwhile, has created a new blog post that describes that they are now working with multiple VMware vendors, unlike one in the first post, and that discussions with VMware are ongoing.

What I wonder is why Microsoft took this approach in the first place; that is, why do they work with VMware? I suppose there was a dead end between the two companies that resulted in Microsoft taking the aggressive route for these services to run on Azure. Although we probably never know the true story here, I suspect there is much more to this story than just VMware deciding that it is okay to run your products in the Microsoft cloud.

For Microsoft, this is an important victory. The company is working to ensure that any type of local workload can be run natively on Azure. VMware, a popular alternative to the company's Hyper-V solution, was one of the few missing components to realize this goal. While the two companies still have a lot of work to do to fully integrate this solution, the fact that VMware is now on board with at least some support for the service is a step in the right direction.

At this time, Microsoft does not share when this product will arrive in GA and says they will share more details in the coming months.
